It is required more than two women in the Council of Ministers!

b_160107054The Initiative “Women Citizens for Constitutional Reform” supports the proposal, made today by the Commission for Gender Equality to the Council of Ministers, which requested amendments to the Law of Council of Ministers and their comply with the Law on Gender Equality. This proposal is the request that Council of Ministers have at least 40% representation of both sexes. Initiative condemns the current composition of the Council of Ministers which has only represented by two women. The same Commission in 2014 supported the Platform of Women’s Priorities for reform of the Constitution that was sent Initiative “Women Citizens for Constitutional Reform”. Initiative believes that the steps taken by the Commission for Gender Equality are important for achieving equality of women in the context of their participation in legislative and executive bodies.

The House of Representatives of the Parliamentary Assembly BiH shall, if the Proposal is adopted, refuse to confirm the appointment of the Council of Ministers if not maintained equal gender representation.

It is anticipated that, if adopted, amendments to the Law on the Council of Ministers enter into force after the General elections in Bosnia and Herzegovina in 2018.

From the Commission for Gender Equality points out that the Proposed Law made amendments to the Law on the Council of Ministers in order to harmonize the obligations of the Law on Gender Equality in BiH, and Article 32 paragraph (2) which prescribes the obligation to coordinate all state and entity laws as well as other relevant legislation with the provisions of this law.

“The Law Proposal on amendments to the Law on the Council of Ministers is fully respecting the basic human rights and freedoms and the principles of gender equality. For implementation of this law it is not necessary to have funds, “explained from the Commission.

In the current convocation of the Council of Ministers there are only two women and these are Minister for Human Rights and Refugees Semiha Borovac and Minister of Defense Marina Pendeš.
