Meeting of the Initiative with representatives of Brčko District

On May 30, at a meeting in the Town Hall in Brčko, Zijad Nišić, the mayor of the Brčko District of BiH, Milijana Simić, a member of the Assembly of the Brčko District of BiH, and the other officials present were introduced to the Initiative “Women Citizens for Constitutional Reform” and what we have done so far, in order for women to be finally visible in the most important legal acts, but also the need to introduce gender-sensitive language in constitutions, statutes, laws and other regulations.

We informed those present about the Recommendation of the Institution of the Human Rights Ombudsman of BiH, which states that the Parliamentary Assembly of BiH should take measures within its jurisdiction with the aim of using gender-sensitive language in drafting, amending or translating the Constitution of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

The topics of the meeting were: the Statute of the Brčko District of BiH, the Constitution of BiH and the demands of the Initiative Women Citizens for Constitutional Reform to amend the Constitution of BiH, what types of discrimination the Constitution of BiH contains, why the Catalog of Human Rights in the Constitution of BiH and the Statute of the Brčko District should be expanded, how to make women more visible in Constitution and what are the solutions for providing greater protection of women’s human rights.

At this meeting, the focus was on whether it is possible to implement gender-sensitive language in the Statute of the Brčko District of Bosnia and Herzegovina (which does not even contain a general provision required by the Law on Gender Equality of BiH, and which revised text was prepared last time in 2010) and what is the best way to make this act gender-sensitive.
